Challenge

Obesity is an epidemic. I was reading in Discover Magazine (I'm a science nerd, okay?), and obesity has actually reached epidemic proportions. I'm not going to write down the stats, but you can read the article here.

Anyway, the point is: the human race is going down hill at an ever increasing speed. We're not just destroying our world, we're destroying our bodies too. We're putting all sorts of chemicals into our systems that probably shouldn't go in there.

I'm reading and awesome book right now, about a girl who stops eating processed food, walks wherever she can and stops using technology. All for the sake of a science experiment that she's doing on herself. She gives all of this up for about 200 days. That includes processed sugar, chocolate, pop and store bought bread.

I'm not that hard core. And apparently it takes a month to get your body clear of all the artificial sweeteners (i.e. aspartame). But I'm going to try this for twenty days, in a less extreme way.

Here's what I'm going to do:

1. From January 1- January 20, 2011 I am not going to eat anything containing:
  • Glucose-Fructose,  Aspartame, high Fructose Corn Syrup or Processed Sugar
  • Anything which contains more than three ingredients not recognizable as a food (i.e. calcium chloride, citric acid, ascorbic acid, sorbitol)
  • Any meat,or meat product (including gelatin, etc.) (no hardship there, since I'm vegetarian anyway)
  • Anything deep fried
  •  Packaged snacks, (i.e. potato chips, pretzels, rice cakes)
 2.  Make my own food wherever possible. I'm going to have to anyway, given requirement 1, since almost everything contains a forbidden ingredient, bread contains Glucose-Fructose, and chocolate contains processed sugar (no chocolate, I'm going to struggle with that).
3. Walk whenever/ wherever possible (home from school, to the library, etc.). Exceptions are: distance, time, temperature, weather conditions, safety, weight of backpack.
I'll update my blog daily to let you all know how it's going (all five of you). It would be great if you guys would do this with me, or any part of it.

Check out the book, my inspiration, here.
